UK Unmarried Partner Visa Requirements

To be eligible for the Unmarried Partner Visa UK, you must:

✔ Be in a genuine and durable relationship for at least two years
✔ Have a British or settled partner (ILR, Refugee status, or EU Settled Status)
✔ Meet the financial requirement (£29,000 per year)
✔ Prove suitable accommodation for you and your partner
✔ Pass an English language test (unless exempt)

If you cannot live together because of work or study, or for cultural reasons, you’ll need to prove that you have an ongoing commitment to each other. You can do this by providing evidence that you:

  • communicate regularly with each other

  • support each other financially

  • care for any children you have together

  • spend time together as a couple, for example on holiday or at events

Unmarried Visa Extensions & Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

After living in the UK on an unmarried Partner Visa for 5 years, you may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), allowing you to settle permanently in the UK.

Settlement and British citizenship

Following a period of residence in the UK on a unmarried partner visa, applicants may become eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and, subsequently, British citizenship (naturalisation). Advice is provided on meeting the relevant requirements and planning the most effective route from initial application through to settlement and citizenship.
