SPONSOR LICENCE APPLICATIONS

UK Sponsor Licence – Expert Immigration Lawyers

Secure a Sponsor Licence & Hire Skilled Workers Legally

A Sponsor Licence allows UK businesses to legally hire skilled workers from overseas, ensuring compliance with UK immigration laws. With 24+ years of experience, our expert UK immigration lawyers help businesses obtain and maintain their Sponsor Licence successfully.

A Sponsor Licence is the authorisation granted by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that permits UK employers to recruit workers from outside the UK under the Skilled Worker, Global Business Mobility and Temporary Worker visa routes. A licence demonstrates that your organisation is genuine, actively trading, and capable of meeting its sponsorship duties, including recruitment, record-keeping, right-to-work checks, and reporting changes to UKVI.

Who Needs a UK Sponsor Licence?

A Sponsor Licence is required for businesses that want to hire foreign workers under:

  • Skilled Worker Visa

  • Global Business Mobility Visas

  • Temporary Worker Visas

A Sponsor Licence is not required to employ individuals who are already eligible to work in the UK, such as British citizens, Irish citizens, or persons with settled or pre-settled status. However, to recruit overseas nationals who require immigration permission to work, a valid sponsor licence is mandatory.

How We Can Help with Your Sponsor Licence Application

🔹 Eligibility Assessment & Legal Advice – Ensuring your business meets requirements
🔹 Comprehensive Document Preparation – Strengthening your application
🔹 Home Office Audit Preparation – Helping you pass compliance checks
🔹 Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) Assistance – Ensuring correct issuance
🔹 Licence Renewal & Ongoing Compliance – Avoiding suspension or revocation

We review your business structure, HR systems, policies, and procedures to ensure they meet UKVI requirements before you apply. A robust application includes evidence of your business’s genuine operation, adequate HR and payroll systems, and a clear explanation of why overseas workers are needed.

Common Challenges in Sponsor Licence Applications

  • Meeting Sponsor Duties & Compliance – Avoiding penalties & refusals

  • Providing the Right Documents – Ensuring all required documents are accurate

  • Home Office Audits & Inspections – Preparing for unannounced visits

Our immigration experts specialise in overcoming refusals and complex cases, ensuring you have the highest chance of success.

The Home Office may request additional information or carry out a compliance visit as part of their assessment of your application. Common reasons for queries or refusal include incomplete supporting evidence, insufficient HR systems, or lack of clarity around key personnel roles. Thorough preparation reduces these risks.

Application Fees and Processing Times
The fee for a sponsor licence depends on the size and type of the organisation. Small or charitable sponsors pay a lower fee, while medium and large organisations are charged a higher fee. The licence, once granted, is normally valid for four years. UKVI aims to process most licence applications within about eight weeks, although priority services may be available for an additional fee.

What Is Involved in the Sponsor Licence Application
The sponsor licence application is submitted online via the UKVI Sponsor Management System. You must complete the application form, nominate the routes you wish to be licensed for (e.g. Skilled Worker, Temporary Worker) and identify your key personnel. Once submitted, UKVI will issue a submission sheet that you must send with supporting documents within five working days. Documents must be originals or certified copies and must prove that your business is genuine, trading, and capable of meeting its sponsor duties.

Sponsor Duties After Licence Grant
Once a sponsor licence is granted, licence holders have ongoing obligations including assigning Certificates of Sponsorship, monitoring sponsored employees’ attendance and contact details, keeping accurate HR records, reporting changes to UKVI, and complying with all sponsor duties. Failure to maintain compliance can lead to licence suspension, downgrading, or revocation.
